Indian Society of Ethno Veterinary Herbal Research was registered on 03.03.2023 with the approval of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
This society is functioning with the objectives of promoting research and development of herbal products, seeking documentation and conservation of ethno veterinary practices and promoting dissemination and utilization of herbal knowledge in the field of veterinary and animal sciences through conferences, seminars/symposium/workshops. It also works to coordinate with other societies with similar objectives within and outside the country for herbal research and development.
Moreover, the society also has the objective to act as an advisory body to the Government of India with respect to formulation of rules and regulations for Validation and Ethno Veterinary Herbal Drug Development. The first convention of the society was held during July 19-21, 2023 with 50 life members.
International Conference on “Global Perspectives in Ethno Veterinary Herbal Research for Production of Residue Free Animal Products” was conducted by this society during 19-21, July 2023 successfully with 174 participants at the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai.
Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai acts as the head quarter of the society. This department operates Ethno Veterinary Herbal Product Research and Development Centre, which is a first of its kind in SAUs to have a fully furnished research and manufacturing facilities for developing veterinary herbal products for the health care of livestock and poultry. This department also offers Post Graduate Diploma in Ethno Veterinary Practices under TANUVAS for field Veterinarians since 2017.
This society also involved in the inclusion of ethno veterinary practices in the veterinary curriculum for the MSVE regulations 2023.

Herbal gardens established for cultivation, conservation and propagation of more than 110 varieties of medicinal plants in different TANUVAS premises for a total of 18 acres. The cultivated medicinal plants are being used for research and product development.
Forty herbal recipes documented from traditional healers for research and development of herbal products for livestock and poultry.
Validation of herbal deworm bolus, herbal immune bolus, ectoparasiticide spray, wound healing oil, anti fungal spray, nano emulgel formulation for mastitis, anti stress bolus, liver tonic, deworming syrup and infertility formulation completed.
Product Manufacturing Unit established with pharmaceutical machineries and air handling units functioning for production of bolus, ointment and syrup products.
Quality Control Laboratory assesses quality and shelf life of pharmaceutical products prepared in the product manufacturing unit.
Herbarium facility created can accommodate many documented plant specimens for future reference.
Laboratory animal house established in the centre will accommodate rats, mice and rabbits for conducting in vivo research on safety and efficacy aspects for drug development.
In silico laboratory established in the centre analyses drug and receptor interaction to facilitate drug discovery for drug development.
Interactive Voice Response System facility created to provide first aid information for the economically important diseases of livestock and poultry on 24x7 mode. Many farmers can get benefit simultaneously with IVRS to address primary health care of their livestock.
In vitro laboratory established in the centre analyses safety and efficacy of formulation to facilitate drug development.
Super Critical Fluid Extraction System facility improves phytochemical output from medicinal plants.
Phytochemical laboratory established. High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography will analyse phytochemicals from medicinal plants. High Performance Liquid Chromatography analyse phytochemicals from blood samples, milk samples and meat samples.
This Centre offers Post Graduate Diploma in Ethno Veterinary Practices (PGDEVP) (distance mode) for Veterinary faculties and field Veterinarians since 2017.A total of 102 veterinarians enrolled in PGDEVP so far.
Ethno Veterinary Training facility established to train farmers and field veterinarians on ethno veterinary practices with boarding and lodging facility.
Training programmes conducted on ethno veterinary practices for 240 TANUVAS faculties, 1600 field veterinarians (38 districts) and for 3000 farmers.
Awareness on ethno veterinary practices was created for 5700 farmers using propaganda vehicle with audio visual aids.
Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, located in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu is the fourth constituent college of TANUVAS sprawling around 206 acres and was started during 2011-12.
This college offers undergraduate and post graduate programmes in Veterinary and Animal Sciences with hostel and library facilities. It also offers PostGraduate Diploma courses through distance mode. It has state of the art facilities in Veterinary Clinical Complex for diagnosis and treatment.

The livestock farm complex comprises of dairy, sheep, goat, piggery, poultry and fodder production units for teaching and research. This college also possesses 12 acres of herbal garden where cultivation of medicinal plants are being carried out.
Thanjavur District is the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu state in the south eastern part of India. The Big Temple and the other famous temples in the district are known all over the world. Thanjavur was the cultural capital of the country in 1790. Thanjavur gained prominence during the period of Chola Kings, who made it as their capital.
Thereafter, it was ruled by Nayaks and Maratta Kings, who nurtured art and culture. The cultural, the architectural and the scholarly pursuits of these rulers are reflected in the great monuments like Grand Anaicut, Big Temple and Saraswathi Mahal Library etc. in the district. Kumbakonam, known as town of temples of Tamil Nadu is also located in Thanjavur district.
